Navy awards IAI a new contract to develop Computational cyber-security Attacker/Analyst Models

Cyber-attacks threaten U.S. security and impede business. A synthetic cyber environment with realistic computational models of the entire cyber-security environment would be useful for obtaining the metrics of cyber-defensive systems, for testing tactics and for training and assessment. IAI and its collaborators, SRI, and Union Interactive propose to build computational models that can play the roles of cyber-attacker, cyber-defender, network users, and network policy makers. This innovative solution, Computational Attackers/Analyst Models (CAAM), will build computational models by determining how human defenders, attackers, and users act within the context of network usage and security. The first step will be to conduct cognitive task analyses (CTAs) that are designed to clearly represent the approach that various players take, and that are sufficiently detailed to inform the design and development of computational models. This approach leverages IAI's expertise and tools in cyber-security research, cognitive task analysis methods, and the computational model Lumen, a product of DARPA’s Cognitive Agents that Learn and Organize (CALO) project. Lumen is a Belief-Desire-Intention style agent framework grounded in a model of procedural reasoning, that can address the kinds of back and forth probes and responses that match the confrontation between cyber-attackers and cyber-defenders. The Lumen system will bring human-like characteristics to the computational models of defenders, attackers, and users. CAAM can be used to test the security of a network, to investigate new defenses against new kinds of attacks, and to train and support defenders to handle attacks
