For many analysis tasks, frame-level contextual understanding including query and content tagging on multimedia data would provide time-critical actionable intelligence and insights. To address this capability gap, IAI and its collaborators at Intelligent Decision Partners, are developing a Scalable and Real-time Hybrid Multimodal Content Exploitation System: HExp (Hybrid Exploitation). The key innovation of HExp is to seamlessly and systematically integrate information retrieval methods from different information spaces. This will help intelligence analysts to search multimedia content in both structured and unstructured spaces, allowing them to search, tag, and track multimedia frames based on time, location, and event categories. HExp consists of three subsystem layers. The first layer is the distributed video or audio annotation subsystem that transforms raw files into text descriptions, semantic entities, and relations. The second layer is the distributed hybrid information procurement subsystem that indexes the unstructured and structured information from multimedia data using different retrieval models. The third layer is the context-sensitive user interaction system that extends IAI’s faceted heterogeneous search interface with a persistent user modeling module. This technology enables the rapid understanding of complex dynamic events, and facilitates a quick response by connecting dots in an environment that possesses high volume, multimodal, multimedia data types. HExp can help in knowledge management, behavior modeling and inference, situational awareness, and security in the government, military, law-enforcement, and private sectors.
