Currently, no existing turnkey software supports all levels of data handling from storage to reporting, in air traffic management (ATM) research. ATM data are characterized by high volume, high velocity and high variety. NASA and industry researchers can meaningfully tap into the valuable resource of National Airspace System (NAS) data by leveraging big data analytics techniques. To facilitate this, IAI, along with collaborators at Exelis will develop a large data warehousing and analysis tool for ATM research that users can access through an intuitive web-based User Interface (UI). This distributed and open standard based tool called Data Storage and Analytics Tool (DSAT) is a multi-level, multi-objective tool for big data analysis that extracts data from a variety of ATM data stores and prepares it for holistic analysis within an actionable timeline. The tool architecture is hierarchical, and as the data flows through multiple levels from raw data to analysis reports & visualization, the data volume reduces and information value increases. DSAT uses the Hadoop platform to store heterogeneous NAS data and an innovative cubing technique to query both raw and processed data. The stored data is analyzed by an analytics layer that can be tailored to fit user preferences. Finally, a visualization and reporting layer converts the final metrics into charts and graphs. DSAT is a data cleansing and storage tool, data analysis tool, and visualization and reporting tool all wrapped into one. It will help data handlers interested in maintaining data quality, researchers looking for patterns in acquired data, analysts who need to compute basic metrics on a particular subset of data, and managers who need to visualize and report results from a particular analysis.
