A major cost in maintaining Low Observable (LO) aircraft is the inspection and repair of the Outer Mold Line (OML) coating system. Airmen survey the entire OML to detect defects. If any damage is found, the defects are traced onto transparent sheets. The size of defect and its position relative to surface features are recorded into an aircraft maintenance system. IAI will develop AUTO-SCAN/XT, an automated inspection tool that will significantly reduce inspection times, improve inspection accuracy, and reduce errors in the inspection process. Combining optical inspection and robotic localization technologies, AUTO-SCAN/XT will allow a user to characterize a defect and record its location with the press of a button. This information will be uploaded to signature assessment systems. IAI will leverage its existing characterization and localization technologies to demonstrate the feasibility of applying it to an aircraft OML inspection system using a demonstration prototype.
