Link-16 is a NATO military tactical data exchange network that enables fighting forces to exchange tactical pictures in near-real time. It can also send and receive text messages, imagery data, and digital voice data. Link-16 radios are typically aboard aircraft, ships, and combat vehicles. IAI is developing the POwer Efficient Modular (POEM) Link 16 handheld device for the Air Force. Dismounted battlefield airmen on foot can use handheld Link-16 radios that are comfortably sized and consume less power, thereby enhancing command and control architectures and situational awareness. POEM will employ a modular, flexible hardware architecture that separates the radio functionality into multiple technology components. POEM will enable a power efficient handheld design by optimizing power consumption and resource utilization at each component. The device can be used not only for communication, but also for other functions by changing how the waveform processor generates and receives signals.
