IAI to Integrate Unified Tactical Radio with Body Area Networks for the Army

The Internet of Things (IoT) is currently being used to explore and build applications connecting Bluetooth smart sensors to the Internet, using communications standard IPv6 to enable mobile devices to be gateways for attaining access to and from the Cloud. Applying an IoT to a Body Area Network (BAN) of sensors on dismounted soldiers can help collect, record and analyze data faster, resulting in improved near real-time battlefield communication, control, planning and decision making. IAI will design, develop and implement integration of Unified tactical Radio communications with Body Area Networks (URBAN). This technology will interface the soldier’s BAN, including health sensors, position and location devices with tactical radios, and provide near real-time health statistics monitoring of the soldier on-the-fly in a tactical network environment. The URBAN system architecture provides software-defined radio (SDR) modules to streamline sensor information from BAN to tactical radios, and process health statistics to identify urgent information that may impact mission planning and strategy. It encapsulates BAN data into IPv6 packets, and transmits and relays BAN data over tactical radio network hierarchy to mission central station and receives feedback. IAI will develop all SDR modules for URBAN, implement the integrated solution on tactical radio platforms, and will extensively test and evaluate the performance of URBAN with emulated tactical network scenarios. The commercial drive for BANs and its use in communication network environments is large and growing. The potential applications for URBAN include critical medical care systems for medical practitioners and health emergency responders. The URBAN technology can also be applied to other information sharing applications by agencies such as border and coast patrol, law enforcement, and emergency control centers.
