Navy Contracts IAI to Continue to Develop Littoral Combat Ship Radar Modeling for Training

Simulators play a prominent role in the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) training construct, and a high level of realism is essential. The LCS integrated bridge and combat scenario training systems for sailors replicates the layout and design of the LCS command and control, propulsion control systems, and a bridge that includes video screens. However, these simulators are incapable of displaying radar clutter such as rainstorms, sea surface scatter, land, trees, mountains, and buildings or other environmental effects. An innovative software solution that models environmental effects into radar displays will increase the realism and effectiveness of LCS training. To address this, IAI and collaborators will continue to work on the design and development of LCS Radar Modeling for Training (LRMT). The product will be a radar modeling engine that captures the effects of environment, weather, jamming/interference and operator actions on radar display. The purpose of this engine is to reduce or eliminate the need for live training by reliably capturing the scenarios encountered by a radar operator. The primary target radars for the proposed effort are LCS radars, including TRS-3D and SEA GIRAFFE.
