Power electronics have emerged as an enabling technology in the deployment of Next-Gen electrified transportation systems. Power electronic converters are critical for the operation of electric cars. The demand for higher efficiency, power, density, and thermal management poses additional challenges for power electronic converters to accommodate. Dr. Khaligh’s presentation will cover the current research areas being pursued by the Maryland Power Electronics Laboratory (MPEL) with emphasis on integrating power electronic converters into electric vehicles. In particular, the focus will be on developing highly efficient isolated onboard chargers for plug-in electric vehicles. Dr. Khaligh will introduce a new technique to track the maximum efficiency point of a LLC converter over a wide range of the battery State-of-Charge (SoC) will be introduced. Alireza Khaligh is an Associate Professor at the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department and the Institute for Systems Research (ISR) of the University of Maryland. Dr. Khaligh is the recipient of various recognitions, including the Inaugural ISR Junior Faculty Fellowship, the George Corcoran Memorial Award, Best Vehicular Electronics Award from IEEE Vehicular Electronics Society, and Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from Society of Automotive Engineers. Dr. Khaligh was the General Chair of the 2013 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC) and the General Chair of the 2016 IEEE Applied Power Electronic Conference and Expo (APEC).
