IAI's Kinematic Trajectory Generator (KTG) is medium fidelity wheels off to wheel on 4D trajectory generator that is used for modeling and simulation based validation of trajectory based operational concepts. The software is available with a bridge that is used with NASA's Airspace Concept Evaluation System (ACES). The well documented API is available to ATM users to easily integrate with other simulation framework. KTG is used by NASA for developing and validating concepts applicable to transitional airspace.

KTG describes the motion of each aircraft in two modes: trimmed mode and transition mode. The trimmed mode is governed by the kinematic aircraft data, which is defined by Eurocontrol's Base of Aircraft Data (BADA)data file derived from nominal aircraft performance. The transition mode describes the motion from one trimmed mode to another. The acceleration/deceleration during transition mode is governed by the designed controller, with acceleration/deceleration constraints computed from the Total Energy Model using the climbing and descent profile in the BADA data.

KTG generated data is validated against ETMS data and high fidelity aircraft models. KTG includes support for 1) VNAV and LNAV trajectories, 2) RNP Trajectory Change Points, 3) MCP and MCDU/FMS based trajectory modification, 4) Nominal and User descent profile, 5) users specified wind and atmosphere models and 4) high computational performance.

Features and Benefits
  • KTG uses a hybrid approach Kinematic and Total Energy Model based trajectory generation
  • KTG uses BADA (Base of Aircraft Data ) aircraft performance data
  • It supports waypoint RTA conformance
  • KTG complies with altitude restrictions (VNAV trajectories)
  • It supports 4D trajectory generation
  • It support RNP waypoint based tracking of flight path
  • KTG is integrated with ACES 6.2 using its STG framework
    1. It can be used in place of, or in addition to default trajectory generator in ACES 6.2
    2. Runway-to-runway trajectory generation in modified ACES 6.2
  • KTG supports standalone mode of trajectory generation and can generate trajectories when flight plan and initial state is provided
  • It supports maneuver based in the trajectory modification. Maneuvers include
    1. Target state (MCP based short term intent change) based maneuvers with flight path recapture
    2. Profile or Procedure based maneuvers (Free Text CPDLC instructions)
    3. Parameterized maneuvers (Path stretch and holding)
  • It supports route change based trajectory modification (MCDU/FMS based flight plan change)
  • It is capable of using a user provided wind and (e.g., non-standard) atmosphere model
  • It uses variable integration time step (0.5s 30s) without loss of data accuracy, which can be user configurable
  • KTG is shown to improve ACES computational performance (35-40% in configuration time, 25-30% in overall run time) over use of default trajectory generator
  • KTG supports trajectory state logging at integration time step granularity
  • It supports user's descent profile based trajectory generation
