Electro-mechanical Systems: Overview

F or over a decade, Intelligent Automation Inc.'s multi-disciplinary Electro-mechanical Systems group has pioneered and delivered state of the art solutions and innovative devices for a host of diverse applications including quality control, actuator development and robotic physical therapy. The research interests of the engineers and scientists comprising the Electro-mechanical Systems group include the integration of mechanical elements, sensors, actuators, and electronics to develop sophisticated systems that can provide optimized performance, enhanced precision and greater reliability. In particular, the development of metrology systems for fostering advancement of technology has always been of significant interest to the group.

Our projects have provided us opportunities to team up and work in partnership with industry leaders such as Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC) for whom we designed, developed, implemented, tested, and manufactured highly reliable electronic enclosures that comprise part of SENTRI/NEXUS, the world's first automated dedicated commuter lane adapted to meet demanding operational law enforcement needs at the border. We have also had the opportunity to develop a customized solution for the automated acquisition, data fusion and storage of topographical characteristics of shaving blade cartridges for Schick-Wilkinson Sword.

Our unique and extensive capabilities have resulted in the development of a novel device involving rigidly controlled electro-mechanical systems to maintain and assess levels of aerobic and anaerobic physical activity in micro-gravity environments for NASA. Successful fielding and operation of this device at the Johnson Space Center, Houston, Texas and recent NIH interest and funding has resulted in the development of a conceptually similar device for the quantitative assessment and rehabilitation of stroke patients in collaboration with the Chicago Rehabilitation Institute Research Corporation. IAI has also worked with the U.S. Army to design an active gun barrel stabilization system. Projects such as these have presented opportunities to us to work alongside a number of other government agencies including DHS, BCIS and DOD to provide innovative solutions for a wide range of technological challenges. Read on to discover more about our diverse projects.
