ROCKVILLE, Md. — Jan. 23, 2020 — Intelligent Automation, Inc. (IAI) is the winner of the 2019 I/ITSEC Serious Games Showcase & Challenge (SGS&C) Best Extended Reality (XR Game) Award. SGS&C is the premier venue for recognition of excellence in the field of serious game development. Funded by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, VestAid helps service members who have suffered a traumatic brain injury complete vestibular rehabilitation home exercises more efficiently. These service members often experience symptoms including dizziness, nausea, and balance problems, which can be improved through regular therapy exercises. The VestAid Game Suite improves patient motivation and compliance through the innovative use of eye tracking with virtual reality (VR) technology and gamification strategies. The system can also help other populations with vestibular pathology, such as athletes post-concussion and the elderly.
The VestAid Game Suite received praise and accolades at I/ITSEC. Attendees who played the games immediately understood the value of the system and were interested in playing the games solely for their entertainment value.
The VestAid Game Suite
A VR rhythm game in which players synchronize eye and head motions with visual representations of song notes in a Guitar Hero-like fashion. Rhythmic Vision provides training for corrective saccadic eye motion.
A tower defense game in which players control a set of cannons to defend a town against incoming pirate ships. The cannons are loaded, aimed, and fired using eye and head movements. This game encourages saccade eye motion, smooth pursuit, and dual/multi-task training.
A car racing game integrated with an automated version of vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) exercises that are administered on a tablet. Not only does the racing game provide encouragement and rewards for adherence to exercise directives, it also provides the therapeutic benefits of habituating patients to visual stimuli.
The VestAid Game Suite leverages IAI’s mSMART healthcare research platform, which supports the development of mobile apps, wearable technologies, and serious games for clinical data collection and analysis. IAI is proud to have developed innovative games that enhance the efficiency and efficacy of vestibular rehabilitation home programs using mobile and tele-health applications. IAI will be conducting extensive human studies to validate these methodologies.
